Why Notarization Alone Isn’t Enough for International Documents
Many people believe that once a document is notarized in Canada, it can be used anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. A notarization only confirms your signature or certifies a copy within Canada. Other countries cannot automatically verify the authority of a Canadian notary.
What Notarization Covers
A notarization confirms:
Your identity
Your signature
That a document copy is true to the original
But this validation does not extend internationally.
Apostille Services in Ontario
The apostille process in Ontario may involve several steps, including:
Preparing or notarizing the document
Submitting the document for apostille certification
Obtaining certified translations if required by the receiving country
Handling these steps correctly the first time helps avoid delays or rejected documents.
Common Documents That Require Apostille/Legalization
• Powers of Attorney
• Birth, marriage, or death certificates
• Diplomas and transcripts
• Police certificates (RCMP Criminal Record)
• Corporate documents
• Travel consent letters
• Documents for student visas (for example Spain)
Before sending documents abroad, it is important to confirm the specific requirements of the destination country.
